Sir Ludwig Guttmann of Stoke Mandeville, England, came up with the idea of having an archery competition for veterans of World War II who had suffered spinal cord injury. The event had such a good turnout that they were held again in 1952 and featured competitors from The Netherlands. By 1960, the games had become popular enough to have Olympic-style competitions organised in Rome, and disabled athletes have been making headlines ever since.
