The flame for the London Olympics burned brightly on British soil on Friday after David Beckham stepped off a special flight from the Games birthplace of Greece to light a cauldron with a golden torch.

The British Airways ‘Firefly’ Flight 2012 from Athens landed on time at the Culdrose naval air station with Britain’s Princess Anne, Games chairman Seb Coe and the former England soccer captain among the delegation.

The flame will start a 70-day torch relay around Britain on Saturday, with triple Olympic gold medallist sailorBen Ainslie carrying it on the first leg from Land’s End on the south-west tip of England.

The Games start on July 27.

London mayor Boris Johnson, his mane of unruly blond hair trimmed for the occasion, declared the moment to be “a big accelerator of the heartbeat”.

“We’ve got 70 days to go,” he told reporters before heading back to London on the golden-liveried plane.

“For someone in my position this is the final furlong for us and that’s when the horses start to change places and so this is going to make the difference now between a good Games and a great Games.”

British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg welcomed the Olympic torch on behalf of the British government on a clear evening in marked contrast to the torrential rain left behind in Athens.

“It is a fantastic moment for us, particularly at a time when there is so much anxiety and concern about the economy and other things, to be uplifted by this whole experience and to be able to showcase ourselves to the world as an open-hearted, generous, dynamic, positive country,” he told the BBC.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for the country as a whole.”

CUSTARD COMET

The arrival of the flame, with Princess Anne carrying it in a special lantern down the steps from the plane, was covered live on Britain’s main BBC station with the plane circling overhead before landing to fit in with the schedules.

“It’s only when the torch comes into your possession that you realise,” the Princess said as she handed the lantern to one of the special security team who will guard it.

Beckham soon lit the Olympic torch and ignited a cauldron with the flame, which was then due to be transferred to Lands End for Saturday’s relay start.

Johnson said the manner of the flame’s arrival bodes well.

“The plane landed bang on time, in fact it was early,” he declared enthusiastically.

“We circled over Cornwall like a custard-coloured comet and that is a metaphor in my view for everything that has happened so far in the London Olympics. It’s been either on time or ahead of time and it’s under budget.”

On Thursday, the flame had been handed over at a damp ceremony in the Athens marble stadium that hosted the first modern Games in 1896.

The flame, lit from the sun’s rays at the home of the ancient Games in Olympia a week ago, was presented under grey and rainy skies to former Olympian Princess Anne by the president of the Hellenic Olympic Committee Spyros Capralos.

Coe, who will head off to Munich on Saturday to watch his beloved Chelsea play Bayern Munich in theChampions League final, was confident the torch relay would light the fire for anyone still ambivalent about the Games.

“It does have a big impact,” he said.

“I saw the test event the other day with a cardboard torch going from Leicester to Peterborough and they (the spectators) were three and four deep on the pavement, in the little villages.

“And every week I get letters from people who are talking about the things they are doing to mark the fact the torch is coming through. There’s an emotional connect with this that I’m not sure all torch relays have got.”

London 2012 Olympic Football tickets go back on sale.

Tickets for the London 2012 Olympic Football Tournament are now on sale on a first come, first served basis.

In the UK and within the EU, approximately 1.5 million tickets are available through the London 2012 ticketing website. Sales will take place on a ‘live’ basis, with payment taken immediately. 

Prices start at £20 for adults, with ‘pay your age’ prices for young people aged 16 and under, and £16 tickets for seniors aged 60 and over available for most sessions.

Tickets are available for Team GB fixtures and all rounds of the competition, with matches taking place at the City of Coventry Stadium, Hampden Park, Millennium Stadium, Old Trafford, St James’ Park and Wembley Stadium.

LOCOG CEO Paul Deighton commented: ‘The Olympic Football Tournament features some of the world’s best young and up and coming players in the men’s game and the cream of the women’s game.

'With ticket prices for adults starting at £20 and our great special prices for young people and those over 60, I’m sure for many these tickets will be the perfect Christmas present.'
Team GB fixtures announced
Earlier this month the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) announced where Team GB will be playing their group fixtures. The men’s team, coached by Stuart Pearce, will begin their London 2012 campaign at Old Trafford on Thursday 26 July, followed by Wembley Stadium on Sunday 29 July. Their final group game will be at the Millennium Stadium on Wednesday 1 August.
Coached by Hope Powell, the women’s team will kick off the tournament on Wednesday 25 July at the Millennium Stadium, with their following match at the same venue on Saturday 28 July. Their final group stage match will take place on Tuesday 31 July at Wembley Stadium.
The official draw for the Olympic Football Tournament will take place on 24 April 2012 at Wembley Stadium, when all group fixtures will be decided for all venues.

Property owners serving the demand generated by the London Olympic Games have received a somber warning from the British Tax body (HMRC) Her Majesty Revenue & Customs.

The Games come to London in 2012 and with them bring millions of foreign visitors.  And, these visitors will be looking for accommodation during their visit.  Many London home owners are now considering renting their homes to make some extra cash

A large number of property letting websites are encouraging homeowners to rent their homes during the Games.  And, many of you are likely to be lured by the opportunity to make some additional money.  But what about the tax implications of renting out your home?  Our guide explains more.

HMRC monitoring rental websites to check income being declared

Olympic events are taking place across the country including London, Windsor and Weymouth.   If you live in one of these areas you may be considering letting out your home.  However, a leading accountant is warning that you could end up facing large penalties if you don’t pay the tax on this income.

And, if you’re planning to use a website to let your home, you could be leading HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to your door.

Nick Parker of RSM Tenon said: “HMRC actively monitor rental accommodation websites and adverts during major events, and we suspect they will be more vigilant than ever during the Olympics.”

Rent a Room scheme allow some untaxed income

Under the HMRC’s Rent a Room Scheme, you can receive up to £4,250 a year tax-free for letting a furnished room.  That would equate to around £1,000-£2,000 per week for the Olympic period.

However, if you are considering offering visitors additional services such as laundry or providing meals, these will need to be added to the rental payments received.

And, if you have received more than £4,250, you’ll need to declare it to HMRC.  If you move out of your home and let it in its entirety, you may also have to pay tax on this rental income.

Olympic Games gearing up with London Cultural Olympiad 2012

EVERYONE KNOWS that the Olympic Games are scheduled to start from 27 July and end on 12 August 2012. Let’s not talk about the Games for now, which are going to be of topmost quality, no doubt. Olympic Games to hit tourism industry

PEOPLE INVOLVED with the tourism industry would suffer heavy losses due to the London Olympic Games, 2012, which are scheduled to start on 27 July and end on 12 August 2012. One trade association also feels that during the time, income would be dropping down to 3.5 billion pounds, as reported by ANI. This would probably happen as the organisers of the games have increased the hotel rates.

If this indeed happens, it would seriously be a great setback for the hoteliers as they have been looking up to the games, which was supposed to provide them with lots of revenues. They had even been trying to provide the best of facilities for the tourists. But, what is the use if there is no tourist inflow into their hotels.

It was also expected that the revenue earned form the Tourism industry would cover up for the losses that were suffered by the LOCOG, during or before the games. All their hopes also have been dashed.  It was so foolish of the LOCOG to book more than what was required. The Independent reports that 600,000 nights had been booked by them for the mega spectacle for various media, sponsors, delegates, etc. But, they have now returned 120,000 of those bookings. With just a few months away, it could have been better if they had given this information before hand, so as to give the hotelier’s time to recover their losses and hire these rooms to other tourists.

It may be a case, where ‘one man’s loss is another’s gain’, as tourists may head to other cities so as to get an affordable accommodation. The Independent also states that the hotel rates have gone up three times and around one million beds would be empty during the games.

London and Surrey to under Olympic cycling tests

Next month’s London-Surrey Cycle Classic is being touted by many as a test run for cycling competitions at the 2012 London Olympics.

The London-Surrey Cycle Classic  is scheduled to pass through six boroughs in London and four Royal Parks in addition to a looped route around Surrey’s Box Hill. In order to sufficiently prepare and stage this event, extensive road closures and disruption to travel is expected on the day.

Seb Coe, London 2012’s chairman, explained at a press conference that the race will be fantastic for cycling enthusiasts and that the interesting route and technical elements for the course decided had attracted the best pro cycling teams competing in the sport.

Those living along the route and spectators intending to travel to be spectators at the race have been advised to avoid getting on the road if possible and make sure that their journey is planned in advance with the aid of Transport for London’s website.

Leon Daniels, Transport for London’s managing director of its surface transport department, told gathering reporters that the London-Surrey Cycle Classic is going to play a vital role in helping London and its transport network be as well-prepared as possible for next summer.

Fans have been encouraged to cheer on each one of the 148 competitors at almost every point of the route but should avoid Surrey’s Box Hill area, which is going to be operating restricted access.

London Olympics 2012 test event tickets available now

THE LONDON Olympic games organisers have announced the sale of tickets for the public of its four test events, which are going to be held from July 31 to August 21. The London Olympics games organisers LOCOG has branded the test events as "London Prepares" series.

Four LOCOG ticketed test events include Mountain Bike, Beach Volleyball, Basketball and BMX.

The Mountain Bike event will be held on July 31 at Hadleigh Farm, Essex, and some of the world’s best men and women’s mountain bikers will be participating in the event. Beach Volleyball will be taking place at Horse Guards Parade from August 9-14, and a total of 54 matches will be played.

The basketball test events will be taking place at Basketball Arena, Olympic Park from August 16-21. In this event six top men’s teams from around the world will compete. In the BMX test event, that is scheduled between August 19-20 at BMX Track, Olympic Park, and 130 men and 40 women riders will show their skills.

Tickets for the four test events are being sold on a first come first served basis. Price of the tickets is from £5 and £35. For children under 16 and under and adults aged 60 and over, tickets will be available on special price. According to LOCOG, 250 tickets will be donated to schools. 

The London Olympics Games 2012 are scheduled to be organised from July 27 to August 12, whereas Paralympic Games are scheduled from August 29 to September 9, 2012.

One in eight London schoolchildren to get free Games tickets

London 2012 Chair Seb Coe and Mayor of London Boris Johnson have sent out a rallying cry to schools to ensure they do not miss out on tickets to London 2012.

LOCOG Chair Seb Coe and Mayor of London Boris Johnson meet pupils from The Compton School in Barnet to promote the Ticketshare scheme.

A total of 125,000 tickets are available to London schoolchildren through the Ticketshare scheme, which means one in eight will receive tickets to the Olympic or Paralympic Games.

A further 50,000 tickets will be distributed to schools across the UK, while 25,000 tickets will also be distributed by the British Olympic Association, British Paralympic Association, Sport England and Tickets for Troops.

The Ticketshare initiative is part of the London 2012 Get Set network, the official London 2012 education programme for schools and colleges across the UK.
Tickets are donated through a levy placed on London 2012 hospitality packages sold by Prestige Hospitality.

LOCOG Chair Seb Coe commented: 'Schools and colleges across London and the UK have a golden opportunity to give some of their pupils the chance of a lifetime – tickets to see the greatest show on earth. More than 18,000 schools have taken the first step towards claiming their tickets by registering with Get Set.

'Now is the time for them to go one step further and apply to join the Get Set network and claim their Ticketshare tickets. I am hugely grateful both to Prestige Ticketing and to the Mayor of London who is fully supportive of the scheme to ensure tickets for London schoolchildren.’

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said, ‘I can think of none more deserving to have a ringside seat at the world’s greatest sporting event than the next generation of Londoners. Over 3,000 schools are part of the London 2012 Get Set network currently and have already been guaranteed an allocation of tickets.

In order to be eligible to receive their allocation of tickets, schools must submit an application to join the Get Set programme by 16 December 2011.

London 2012 Olympic venues to stage test events this summer

Spectators will get their first taste of sport in the new 2012 Olympic venues this summer at test events including beach volleyball at Horse Guards Parade and basketball in the Olympic Park, London organisers have revealed.

A comprehensive 12-month testing programme will cover 42 events across 26 venues and involving 8,000 athletes from more than 50 countries. Not all of the events will be open to the public, depending on the emphasis of the tests.

A total of 150,000 tickets costing between £5 and £35 will be on sale across several events, though others such as the London–Surrey Cycle Classic to test the road race route will be free.

Tickets for the equestrian test events at Greenwich Park will be given away to local residents. Altogether, a total of 250,000 spectators are expected to see events in the so-called "London Prepares Series".

"This is a dress rehearsal for us but the public, of course, will see the rehearsal not the dress. It will look and feel quite different," London 2012's chief executive, Paul Deighton, said. "We don't expect to get everything absolutely right. If we did I wouldn't be happy because we wouldn't be stress-testing things properly. We will learn from our mistakes and make changes."

The series takes in events organised and ticketed by the London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Locog), such as the mountain biking at Hadleigh Farm for which there will be 5,000 tickets available in July, and others, such as the Badminton World Championships at Wembley Arena in August, that it will not organise but will help to staff and operate.

The test events are grouped into three "clusters". The first, in July and August this year, predominantly take place at venues away from the Park. The exceptions are the BMX and basketball events on the Olympic Park, for which spectators will be bussed in to what will still be a construction site.

Locog will build reduced versions of the temporary grandstands that will be used for the Games at the showjumping arena in Greenwich Park and the beach volleyball venue at Horse Guards Parade.

The second cluster of events, from November to January next year, will include events at the aquatics centre and the velodrome, while the third cluster in April and May 2012 will test the rest of the Olympic Park venues including the athletics stadium.

Deighton said the events would be used to test technology, security, ticketing, crowd flows and logistical considerations surrounding the individual sports themselves. Modern pentathlon, for example, has recently switched to laser shooting in place of the traditional air rifles and will need to be rigorously tested in situ at Greenwich Park.

Deighton and Locog's head of sport, Debbie Jevans, said lessons had been learned about the staging of events from Beijing and about city-wide logistics from the Vancouver Winter Games.

In Vancouver in 2010, organisers came under fire for the Own the Podium programme that attempted to maximise home advantage by restricting access to rival teams.

Asked whether London organisers risked going the other way by inviting top-class athletes to compete in Games-time conditions at new 2012 venues, Jevans said: "We have worked closely with the BOA but also with international federations to allow them access. We have to be open but we also have to get ready to deliver these Games."

Deighton also confirmed that those who did not get all the tickets they applied for in the first phase of applications, which closed on 26 April, would be offered the chance to buy other tickets in July. Those who didn't apply in the first phase won't be able to do so until late this year.Tickets for the test events will be sold through Ticketmaster from 26 May.

If you observe the Olympic logo 2012 carefully, you would be see that the numbers 2012 are designed in such a way that it appeals to the modern Internet loving generation.  In the newly designed logo, the Olympic rings and the word London are taken and placed together along with the first two digits.  The London Olympic Logo has been  designed by Wolff Ollins, and you would be amazed to know that the newly designed Olympic logo has cost a good £400,000 to design!  The design of the new Olympic 2012 Logo has evoked a mixed response.

Lord Coe has clearly emphasized that the new 2012 Olympic logo is just not a design, but an emblem representing a brand.  He clearly mentioned that the stage is set to host London Olympics and it would do its best to make it a grand success.  The success of London Olympics with its new logo should take London forward for at least the coming five years.   As mentioned earlier, the London Olympic logo has been designed keeping the youngsters in mind and to involve them more and more in making London 2012 Olympic Games a grand success.

In previous Olympics, the logo would essentially depict the image of the city that was hosting the Olympics.  In order to do something different, this logo was designed in a different way.  The organizers are highly optimistic that the 2012 Olympic logo with its brand value would generate a whopping two billion pounds which would definitely help in hosting the Olympics in a huge way.  The wonderful message is that the London Olympics is for everyone.

Even the President of the International Olympic Committee was lavish in his praise while stating that the London 2012 Olympics logo is highly innovative and would definitely attract young people to watch more sports, take up sports as a career and help to inculcate the values of a true sportsperson.  The logo of the London Olympic Games clearly states that the London games are going to be the most modern and dynamic ever.  The organizers are happy and thrilled to note that the goodwill and success of the Olympic Games are going to continue for the next few years.

You can easily guess the goals of the London Olympic Games by looking at the logo.  The logo invites the people world over to come and take part in the Olympics.  The main objective is to involve as many youngsters as possible and increase their interest in sporting activities.   The London games belong to everyone.  As stated earlier, the London Olympic Games promises to be highly modern, flexible and dynamic.  This is the message outlining the design of the logo.  So, get ready for the biggest extravaganza on earth.
